New Zealand’s twelve days of Christmas (more or less)

I doubt that it’s for religious reasons–New Zealand’s pretty secular–but a fair percentage of the country shuts down for a couple of weeks around Christmas.  Signs in shop windows say things like “Gone fishing and swimming, Dec. 23-Jan 5.” The biggest newspaper stops publication of its weekend magazine for two weeks. The hospital shut its clinic for three weeks (for cost savings–a bit hard on the patients), so Rick has only a few days at the hospital.

After all, this is the beginning of summer. Our Cambodian friends shut their bakery to go camping somewhere along the west coast. As I mentioned a few posts ago, the peninsula near Christchurch will be crawling with people about now. And we’re headed out for a day of snorkeling and kayaking at the Poor Knights Islands. We’re driving from home because there’s no way to book a room anywhere nearby.

Happy New Year!
