The beach in “December,” part 1

We’re not doing much swimming or sitting on the beach these days, but when there’s a break in the weather, we like to head toward the Pacific.

Some days the breaks are pretty short, as on the day we saw these trees

near this beach. The beach grass looked familiar, and so did the shrubs–much like salal.

The beach didn’t look too friendly.

We hiked over a hill to see a different beach, and just viewed it from the shoulder because we could see the rain was headed our direction.

Weekend places are known as baches (as in bachelors’ quarters). In this era of excess they can be big and fancy, but traditionally they were small and simple, like these.

Since we’re in the subtropics, there are trees

and shrubs in bloom.
