Straight north

After ten months here, Rick and I realized that we have seen almost no people who are recognizably nonheterosexual. We don’t see many public displays of affection here, at least among those older than twenty, except for a very few heterosexual couples and a bartender at our local and her girlfriend. At the hospital, which serves a population of 140,000, Rick’s seen only one HIV-positive and one AIDs patient.

Of course, we’re not exactly out and about much, but we do wonder whether Northland has a lot of full closets, or whether nonstraights decide that life would be easier in bigger cities, particularly in Auckland. Probably some of each.
