A holiday weekend–but not Labor Day

Labour Day, and Labour Weekend, won’t arrive until the end of October, weeks after we’ve left. Labour Day was the first national holiday we experienced here.

The holiday this weekend is…Father’s Day. Yup, New Zealand and Australia observe it the first Sunday in September. Why? My little research turned up no reason, just a suggestion that since it’s spring, it’s a good time to do things outside–although it’s still pretty chilly on the South Island.

But up here in the subtropics, the 7th graders I talked to all plan to go with their fathers to the beach on Sunday. We may be there, too.
